Completely enclosed by a monumental 15th century fortified wall, it has museums, churches, restaurants, bars and shops, all packed into narrow mediaeval streets which still follow the original Roman plan. In Lucca, the pedestrian comes before the motor car, and you can spend hours wandering through beautiful squares, visiting the cathedral or one of the dozen museums.

Alternatively, hire a bike and cycle around the top of the city wall - a great way to see the town and its surroundings. Then relax in one of the dozens of superb bars, coffee shops and restaurants.

Lucca is also a great base for exploring the other Tuscan gems of Pisa, Florence, Volterra and San Gimignano, the beaches of Versilia or the nature reserves of the Apuan Alps and the Garfagnana. The main railway station is just a few minutes walk from La Casa ai Borghi your gateway to one of the world's most beautiful and culturally exciting regions.

San Gimignano is probably the most famous small town in Italy - there are few places that evoke the atmosphere of mediaeval Tuscany so powerfully. Its towers soar into the sky, making this little hilltop town a spectacular place to visit.

Volterra encloses 3,000 years of history within its fortifications - the first town wall was raised in the 4th century BC. Thanks to its isolated position, Volterra is unspoiled by the 21st century, retaining its mediaeval character. You will be able to visit Etruscan remains, the Roman baths, amphitheatre and Acropolis, museums and galleries, churches and the Duomo, or walk around the mediaeval wall and gates.

Visit Pisa, home of the most unmissable Leaning Tower, and then on to Florence. The home of Michelangelo, Botticelli and the Medici, of the Ponte Vecchio and the Neptune Fountain; the birthplace of modern art, sculpture and commerce, and the centre of the Renaissance, Florence is a holiday in itself.
