This quiet and tranquil holiday flat lies on the fourth and top floor of Palazzo Guinigi in the heart of the historic city of Lucca, opposite the famous Guinigi tower. This Lucca apartment rental is the ideal base for exploring the walled city … and the beauties of Tuscany beyond.
The city is less bustling than Pisa or Florence and you can really relax and enjoy the charm of its winding medieval streets, churches and museums. It is an outstanding vacation base, and as well as visiting its many attractions you can drive to the coast in 20 minutes or reach Pisa (30 minutes) or Florence (one hour) very easily.
Pisa probably suffers a little from the fame of the Leaning Tower. The tower, now saved for another few centuries by pioneering architectural work, is indeed a marvel and little prepares you for the drama of your first sight of it. But it is only one element of the collection of Renaissance buildings that form the Campo dei Miracoli, literally the ‘field of miracles’ at the heart of the town, and which include the Baptistery, Camposanto and Duomo (cathedral). It’s a city of remarkable beauty, of churches and civic buildings in the distinctive Pisan-Romanesque style of architecture and some marvellous sculpture.
Florence meanwhile is rightly famed as a treasure house of Renaissance painting, sculpture and architecture. With fine churches and public architecture such as the remarkable Ponte Vecchio you don’t need to step off the street to enjoy a cultural history lesson. Foreigners have long been visiting to swoon at the beauties of a city created by the fabulously rich families (such as the Medici) who ran Florence during its medieval heyday ... Florence was arguably the cradle of the European Renaissance in art and culture and will reward days (or weeks) of exploration.
