One of Europe's most impressive walled cities, Lucca wears its great antiquity with pride and a great deal of style. A bewildering maze of winding, cobbled streets, it is crowded with ancient townhouses, ornate, mediæval churches, and the occasional Roman edifice - after all, Julius Caesar, Pompey and Crassus carved up the Empire here in 56 BC.
Apartment Mezzanino lies on the Via Fillungo, Lucca's most important street, which snakes from the ancient forum (now Piazza San Michele) to the main gate of Porta San Pietro. Almost on the front doorstep are Lucca's famous Roman amphitheatre - now a public square and occasional marketplace - and the ornate 12th-century church of San Frediano. Almost all the attractions of this ancient city are within walking distance - large sections of the centre are pedestrianised and you can spend days discovering hidden churches, museums, boutiques and restaurants - maybe catching one of the regular markets, concerts or pageants that Lucca boasts.
Once you've seen Lucca itself, you'll find yourself perfectly placed for excursions to the rest of northern Tuscany - the town is well served by motorway, rail and bus connections. You can be on the beach or in Pisa in half-an-hour, and in little more than an hour you can be deep in alpine nature reserves, exploring the treasures of Renaissance Florence, or sampling the famous wines of the Chianti Hills.
