From the trees-topped tower of Palazzo Guinigi there is a splendid view of the city, with its red rooftops, its campaniles and the surrounding countryside which ends in the distance with the majestic profile of the Apuan Mountains. Walking down toward the centre, you will discover 14th-century houses, Renaissance loggias, small antique shops open along the stone-paved alleyways, and you can buy “buccellato”, a typical local cake, in the small pastry shops with tables set out along the street.
A must is a trip to the Garfagnana, a vast valley that reaches from the Apennine to the Apuan mountains with a grand variety of landscapes. Here, tombs from the Stone Age were discovered. You can reach the beach resorts of Versilia in just half an hour.
