Viareggio and the Versilian Riviera

Apartment Felicità is just a couple of minutes from Viareggio's famous Bagni (bathing establishments) which keep the sand clean, rent out sunbeds, parasols and deckchairs, and offer a variety of other services including showers, changing rooms, bars and restaurants.

Many of the Bagni are fronted by stylish, late-19th-century Liberty style buildings with fantastic crests and bright tiles - these structures form a wide boulevard that is ideal for a gentle stroll, enjoying an ice-cream and engaging in the national sport of people-watching.

The Versilian Riviera stretches from Forte dei Marmi in the north to Torre del Lago Puccini in the south, and is an area of great natural beauty with pine forests and lakes as well as twenty kilometres of sandy beaches.

The Apuan Alps provide a spectacular backdrop and are probably best enjoyed from the sea - there are plenty of boat trips on offer from Viareggio, exploring the local coastline or heading northwards to La Spezia and the Cinque Terre.

There is a busy calendar of local events, highlights being the Viareggio Carnival in February, the summer opera festival at Torre del Lago, and the Viareggio International Film Festival in November.

Lucca and the rest of Tuscany

Viareggio lies less than half-an-hour west of the provincial capital, Lucca. A small but wealthy city with excellent facilities, Lucca is notable for its monumental city walls and several important churches and towers. There are also excellent transport links to Florence, Siena and the vineyards of Chianti and southern Tuscany.

Pisa, also less than half-an-hour away, has the nearest international airport and a range of attractions including excellent facilities, restaurants and sites of historical importance. It is well worth a detour for the Leaning Tower alone.
