Self catering holidays in Italy – home rental north of Lucca, Tuscany

A beautiful holiday property to rent in Tuscany – this is a restored 18th century farmhouse with panoramic views of the Lucchese valley and the sea.

The house is 450 metres above sea level and set amongst chestnut trees and olive groves. Petrognano is famed for its beautiful walks and stunning scenery, where vineyards sweep down to meet olive groves. The hilltop location and its proximity to Lucca (20 minutes) combines both a tranquil rural holiday with the attractions of Lucca’s museums, churches, shops and restaurants. Within 15 minutes drive are several famous Lucchese villas such as Villa Mansi, Torrigiani, Reale and Grabau, all of which open their doors to the public.

For children Pinocchio Park is 10 minutes away by car in Collodi. There you will also find the breathtaking gardens of Villa Garzoni complete with maze, hidden grottoes and butterfly house – well worth a visit. The seaside towns of Viareggio, Lido di Camaiore and Forte di Marmi are an easy 30-minute drive.

The accommodation sleeps eight. There are four double bedrooms (two doubles, two twin beds or three doubles and a twin); three bathrooms (one en suite); two reception rooms, kitchen/dining room, pantry and a large cantina. Each room offers panoramic views over the Lucca plain.

There are two panoramic tiled terraced areas to the front of the house. A stunning 8.5 metre x 4 metre private swimming pool can also be accessed straight from the master bedroom or from the terrace on the ground floor. Normally open from May to October.

The nearby Strada del Vino offers many opportunities to sample and buy wine from the many fattorias. The nearest one is Fattoria Villa Gambaro and a pleasant 10-minute stroll takes you to a restaurant serving local Tuscan specialities. The nearest small shop and coffee bar is a five-minute drive away in the pretty village of San Gennaro. There is a larger general store a 10-minute drive away near the famous and beautiful Villa Torrigiani in Lucca.

Price per week: April €1200, May €1400, June €1800, July and August €2300 apiece, September €1800 and October €1400.
