This remarkable vacation apartment overlooks the ancient Roman amphitheatre in the mediaeval city of Lucca. Sleeping up to four, La Grotta lies in the historical centre of the city.

The apartment is set into the walls of the world famous amphitheatre, with the building itself constructed in the second century BC. The flat is accessed from Piazza Antifeatro, once the centre of the market in Lucca and today a piazza lined with bars, cafes and shops. It is also close to Via Fillungo - Lucca's main street and full of shops and boutiques.

You'll find the apartment very comfortable, furnished in the typical cosy Tuscan style. The building itself has a remarkable history, being used as a prison in the Middle Ages, before being restructured in 1830 by the famous architect Lorenzo Nottolini.

La Grotta lies on the first floor of the building. It has a small but fully equipped kitchen, a bathroom with a shower, and a comfortable sitting room, where you can eat and rest on the sofabed. This room has a small balcony, providing a breathtaking view of the amphitheatre. Upstairs there is a beautifully light and airy bedroom. This comfortable home from home is a perfect base for exploring the city.

And exploring Lucca is a pleasure, because though as fascinating as its neighbours Pisa, Siena and Florence, this ancient city - founded by the Romans in 180BC - is far less bustling and busy. Completely enclosed by a monumental 15th century fortified wall, it has museums, churches, restaurants, bars and shops, all packed into narrow mediaeval streets which still follow the original Roman plan.
