Although the setting is peaceful and secluded, the holiday accommodation at Via di Mammoli is a short drive (8km) from Lucca and is within easy daytripping distance of many of Tuscany's greatest attractions.

Lucca is the provincial capital - a busy little city whose centre is wrapped in monumental mediæval walls. With Roman remains (Caesar met Brutus and Crassus here in 56BC), dozens of Renaissance churches and a skyline of towers and palatial villas, there is a wonderful air of antiquity.

Unlike some of Tuscany's larger cities, which have succumbed to the pressures of tourism, Lucca still has a lively, ‘lived-in’ feel, and is a city of busy bars and restaurants, with homes and businesses dotted among the many shops.

With good motorway and rail links from Lucca, it is remarkably easy to see the rest of Tuscany. The miracles (and airport) of Pisa are half an hour away, as are the Liberty bath houses and sandy beaches of Viareggio and the Versilian Riviera.

To the north the country gradually climbs through vineyards, villas and spa towns into the forested peaks and nature reserves of the Garfagnana and the Apuan and Appenine Alps. To the east you'll find the treasures of Florence (an hour's drive), ancient Etruscan strongholds like Volterra, and the vineyards and restaurants of Chianti.
