Lucca itself offers enormous amounts to the visitor. Less bustling than Pisa or Florence, this ancient city - founded by the Romans in 180BC - is the perfect centre for your Tuscan holiday. Completely enclosed by a monumental 15th century fortified wall, and surrounded by a grassed defensive moat, Lucca is impressive enough on first sight. But explore a little more and you'll learn to love this city. It has museums, churches (including a fine cathedral), restaurants, bars and shops, all packed into narrow mediaeval streets which still follow the original Roman plan. In Lucca, the pedestrian comes before the motor car, and you can spend hours wandering through beautiful squares, visiting the cathedral or one of the dozen museums, or hiring a bike and cycling around the top of the city wall - a great way to see the town and its surroundings. Then relax in one of the dozens of superb bars, coffee shops and restaurants.

Strike out into Tuscany and you'll discover one of the loveliest regions in Italy. This is an area of former city states, leaving a legacy of fortified hill-towns; the land is immaculately cultivated, with serried rows of olive groves, vineyards and cypress trees. Gently rolling hills are topped by idyllic farmhouses and villas, honey-coloured stone contrasting with the lush greenery of the landscape.

You'll find the landscapes recognisable from myriad Renaissance paintings - masters such as Leonardo da Vinci, Piero della Francesca, Vasari (and many more) lived and worked here - and Tuscany was the cradle of the Renaissance. The national language evolved from the Tuscan dialect, with Dante writing the Divine Comedy in the language of his home region.

You'll find some of the finest food and drink in Italy here (no mean claim). Cuts of beef or pork, thick bean soups, spinach and artichokes are staples, and the keynote is simple preparation and perhaps a drizzle of olive oil - and Tuscany produces the finest oil in Italy. Wine, meanwhile, comes from the vineyards of Chianti, Montepulciano, Orvieto, and the many other fine vintages of the region.

Visiting Lucca you'll not only discover one of Italy's loveliest mediaeval cities, but you will be close to hill towns, countryside and the seaside at Viareggio. Exciting cities such as Florence, Pisa, Siena and San Gimignano lie within easy reach. Click below to contact your hosts and find out more.
