[ local map | map of region ]The villa dates back to the turn of the twentieth century. There is a private garden laid out with a lovely lawn and olive trees. There is also a paved area, equipped with barbecue, sunshade and garden furniture.
The house is on three floors. The ground floor has a hall, living room and a spacious kitchen; the first floor has two spacious double bedrooms and a bathroom; the second floor has another two spacious double rooms and a bathroom. The house is equipped with a washing machine, dishwasher, oven, microwave, TV and stereo.
Most compelling is the easy access to the marvellous medieval city of Lucca. Actually a much older town, this was a base of the old Etruscan civilization that predated the Romans. The Romans came and laid out Lucca on the neat grid of streets that survives to this day.
But the predominant mood of the architecture and streets of Lucca is medieval. In the thirteenth and fourteenth century the city (which was by then a republic vying with the likes of Florence, Siena and Pisa for power) was enclosed within vast defensive walls. These walls, more than two miles around, are still completely intact today, topped with lawns and parks, and a hugely popular venue for cyclists, joggers or people just wandering and looking down at the town below.
The town itself has a fine Duomo (cathedral), Romanesque churches, old palazzos, and good shops, restaurants and cafes. The little winding medieval lanes that pick their way amidst the tidy Roman grid of streets reveal a host of delightful surprises.
