And this apartment is perfect for exploring this delightful Tuscan city. Lucca is an ancient town – the original Etruscan settlement was enlarged by the Romans, who laid out the grid of the town which still exists today. Indeed there is an intact Roman amphitheatre at the very heart of the town. Encircling walls of the amphitheatre are occupied by shops and flats – this is very much a slice of living history. Yet the fabric of Lucca is largely medieval, and the city is entirely encircled by massive fourteenth century defensive walls. These are so deep that parks run along the top, and this is a favourite spot for the ‘passeggiata’, for jogging and cycling.
The largely pedestrianised city is a delightful rabbit warren of narrow streets, some little more than alleyways. This comfortably affluent Tuscan city has marvellous shops, restaurants, bars and cafes, and you’ll spend many hours stumbling across lovely little Romanesque churches tucked down side streets.
