The Garfagnana, Lucca and northern Tuscany

Bed and Breakfast Rustico Sara is situated in the heart of the Garfagnana, tucked between the Apuan and Appenine Alps some 40 kilometres north of Lucca. A typical Tuscan country house, the B&B is perched on a hill in the village of Brucciano, and enjoys breathtaking views of the surrounding forests and mountains.

The Garfagnana boasts some of Tuscany's wildest and most beautiful scenery, with thick chestnut forests, cascading mountain streams, lush alpine meadows and a scattering of ancient, fortified villages.

The skiing is excellent and there are countless trails for mountain-bikers (there are two bikes available), hikers and hill-climbers (who may want to try out Mount Pania, which is only 6 minutes away). The truly brave (or insane) can try their hand at hang-gliding (Diecimo, 20 mins) while gentler sport is available in the form of golf at Fosciandora (10 mins) or swimming at Gallicano (6 mins). Horse riding is available just outside Barga (10 mins) with some particularly beautiful trails to explore. Rustico Sara & Cottage Giusi is about 5 km away from the Parco del Levigliese, in the park you can to climb and to canoe, you can practise skiing, canyoning, trekking and you can make excursions and guided tours in cave (for adults and children).

Nearby attractions include the impressive Grotte del Vento - Tuscany's finest cave system, the ancient hermitage at Calomini, the wolves and eagles of Orecchiella Park, and the historical centres of Barga and Castelnuovo Garfagnana. The area has many friendly family restaurants where it is possible to eat extremely well indeed, at very reasonable prices.

Other attractions worth seeing are the cities of Lucca (40km), Pisa (60km) and Florence (90km) - each with its own distinctive history and monuments. Sun seekers will probably want to dip into the Mediterranean - the cliffside villages of the Cinque Terre and the sandy beaches of the Versilian Riviera (30 mins) both making delightful day trips.
