Villa La Scassatina, built some 300 years ago, was once part of a large country estate looking out over the ancient village of San Gennaro. It has splendid views of the surrounding countryside, especially from the large swimming pool, which enjoys day-long sunshine.
The main house offers luxurious holiday accommodation for six guests; a clever combination of the old (antique furnishings, chestnut and terracotta floors, beamed ceilings...) and the new (satellite TV, stereo, phone/fax, computer connections...). The kitchen is fully equipped and there is a washing machine. The villa has shuttered, double-glazed windows and a gas-fired convection heating system - a real boon in the cooler winter months.
There are indoor games, a small library of books for holiday reading, an English/Italian dictionary, and a selection of guides to nearby villas, gardens, attractions and activities, including local restaurants.
The villa is built on three levels, the lowest of which consists of a large living/dining room, the kitchen and a bathroom with shower and bath. The kitchen looks delightfully rustic but has modern appliances including a large fridge freezer, a gas hob, a large electric oven, a microwave and a dishwasher. The kitchen table seats four, and there is a corner fireplace if you want to cook on coals. The elegant dining room has a stereo system and an antique dining table which seats eight.
There are three double bedrooms on the first floor, two with twin beds and one with a queen-sized bed. Each has ample storage space, antique wardrobes and wonderful views. Each also has a fully-tiled en suite bathroom with European fixtures and showers.
The top level has an open plan living room with a desk for writing or computer work and a view up the valley to the local church. A double-sided fireplace divides this part of the the room from the main living room with its stereo TV and VCR. A wooden monastery door leads from the living room to the top terrace, which is surrounded by an olive grove, and is furnished for al fresco meals.
