During the mediaeval period the whole town was encircled by a monumental defensive wall, which still stands intact and is one of the delights of the city. The immensely deep walls have parks and tree-lined paths running around the top - this is a popular circuit for cyclists and joggers, with great views of the Romanesque churches of Lucca within and of the hills without. Indeed even within Lucca itself the narrow streets give the cyclist and the pedestrian precedence over drivers: this is a great town to wander on foot.

There are very good bars, restaurants and shops - Lucca is one of the most affluent and urbane of Italian cities - but the atmosphere is relaxed, nowhere near as bustling and frenetic as some of Italian cities. There is a wealth of mediaeval architecture, with some particularly fine Pisan-Romanesque churches, such as San Michele, San Francesco, San Frediano and the Duomo itself. Within the mediaeval core of the city, the Roman skeleton keeps poking through, with the Piazza Anfiteatro built upon the old Roman arena, and with sections of the old Roman walls still visible.
