Lucca is a marvellous, predominantly medieval city, though its roots date back far further, to the pre-Christian Etruscan civilisation that gives Tuscany its name. With a street grid laid out by the Romans, and narrow, winding medieval alleyways, all contained within massive fourteenth century defensive walls. Lucca affords endless exploration.
You’ll probably fly in to Pisa, and it’s worth paying a visit to explore one of Europe’s most impressive Renaissance cities. The Leaning Tower sits at the centre of the Campo dei Miracoli. Comprising the Tower, the Baptistery, the Duomo and the Camposanto, this is a spectacular collection of Renaissance architecture.
And you can unwind at the beach, with the smart resort of Viareggio 20km away on the Versilian Riviera. Enjoy a coffee or a glass of wine, stroll with a gelato, or just soak up the Mediterranean sun.
