If you don't know Lucca you're in for a marvellous surprise. One of the major Tuscan cities (and former city states) along with Florence, Siena and Pisa, it is nonetheless quieter and less bustling than its neighbours. Probably the most graceful of the Tuscan provincial capitals, it sits within enormous mediaeval fortified walls. These once defended Lucca against her enemies, today they provide a delightful view of the surrounding town and countryside and are well-used by joggers and cyclists. Dotted with majestic plane trees, there are parks (this is a marvellous spot to take a picnic beneath the trees' shade on a sunny day) and the town's botanic gardens.
Descend into the city itself and you realise that the pedestrian comes before the car in Lucca. That's a good thing - the town's narrow, winding streets follow a pattern far older than the mediaeval fabric of most of Lucca, maintaining the grid laid out by the Romans when they first developed the city in 180BC.
The whole city is a marvellous jumble of churches (there were once 70-100 here), Renaissance palazzi, the old Amphitheatre, piazzas and unexpected alleyways. There are terrific pizzerias, restaurants, bars, some very chic shops and the Duomo - the city's cathedral. With the circumference of the walls being less than two miles, you get an idea of how much is squeezed within a tiny area. And with the car relegated to second place, most Lucchese choose to travel round their city by bicycle. It makes for a delightfully relaxed (and clean) environment) and your apartment lies at its very heart.
