Lucca, just 12km away, is one of the relatively undiscovered gems of Tuscany. This ancient city dates back to the old Etruscan civilisation. Its street plan was laid out by the Romans (and survives to this day) and the fabric of the 'modern' town is largely mediaeval, with Lucca sitting behind monumental and intact defensive walls. Within you can walk or cycle (the car comes second to the pedestrian in this town) and enjoy beautiful churches, galleries, the Duomo, hidden alleyways and squares. Lucca also has great cafes, bars and restaurants, and Tuscan cuisine is second to none.

Pisa, with its Leaning Tower lying at the centre of the breathtaking mediaeval cityscape of the Campo dei Miracoli (or 'field of miracles') is 45km distant. No visit is complete without exploring this gem of Italian architecture, its red-tiled terracotta roofs glowing in the Tuscan sun.

And there is Florence, the site of the Uffizi Gallery and of Michelangelo's David; of San Marco, the showcase of the devotional art of Fra'Angelico; of Santa Croce with Giotto's frescoes; of the marvellous sculptures at the Bargello. Florence is where the Renaissance began and it is, simply, the greatest single repository of Renaissance art and architecture in the world. You'll marvel ... and you'll enjoy some of the best restaurants, bars and shops in Italy.
