You'll find an enormous amount to explore and enjoy around here too. The city of Pisa is, of course, famous for its Leaning Tower. But the Tower, now saved from collapse by extensive restoration over the past few years, is only one element of the Campo dei Miracoli (the 'field of miracles') which forms the mediaeval core of the city. Here the cathedral (or Duomo), the baptistery and the bell tower combine to form an unspoiled and unchanged whole - a mediaeval city centre.

There is Italy's second-largest port in the shape of Livorno (slightly archaically known as 'Leghorn' to British visitors), and from here you can take ferries out to Corsica, Sardinia, even Sicily. And there are any number of seaside resorts strung out along the Etruscan Coast should you wish for a day at the beach. Explore Quercianella, Castiglioncello or Vada. Or head inland slightly and enjoy the nature reserve at Bolgheri.
