With great natural light, spacious rooms and a view over Siena's most famous square, Apartment Palio is a particularly special residence. The apartment covers 140m2 in an elegant townhouse that faces onto the Piazza del Campo.
The shell-shaped piazza is lined with important buildings and monuments and is considered to be the heart of Siena. It is here that the world-famous Palio is held - a strongly contested horse race between the 17 contrade (traditional districts) of Siena. The race is held at the beginning of July and in the middle of August, and with flag-waving mediaeval pageantry and throngs of fervent supporters is one of Italy's greatest spectacles.
Siena has much more to offer of course. This city dates back to the early Etruscans and was an important trading centre for the Romans and Lombards; it was one of the pillars of the Renaissance and constantly vied against its bigger, more dominant neighbour Florence. There are a wealth of remains to be seen, churches and museums to explore, and some spectacular architecture to be admired.
