Lying on a hill, along the road to Pienza, a few metres from the Tempio di San Biagio and the cross-roads for Chianciano Terme, Il Girasole has a particularly good panoramic position. Unique in the area, it allows you to see both Montepulciano and Montefollonico and Monte Amiata (the highest extinct volcano in Italy). Sitting within the Natural Park of the Val d'Orcia, this is a marvellously rich and unspoiled area - from here you'll see pheasant, hares, and deer in the fields below.
Il Girasole (the name means 'the sunflower') can be your starting point as you discover the land between Valdichiana and Val d'Orcia. For centuries artists, painters and poets have fallen in love with Val d'Orcia. You will discover why, as you encounter a landscape of old villages; rich traditions; isolated and imposing fortresses that still stand guard over the countryside; of rolling hills, patchworked with vineyards and olive groves; and fields of grain and of sunflowers, edged with cypresses.
The soils here are wholesome and health-giving, and the area is rich with thermal springs such as Chianciano Terme, Bagno Vignoni, Bagni San Filippo and San Casciano dei Bagni. Ask your hosts for a list of touring itineraries from here. From Il Girasole you can journey on foot or by mountain bike to Montichiello, Pienza, Montepulciano and many more destinations, discovering the unique colours, scents and flavours of this land. And thanks to its terrific strategic position, you will easily be able to reach the major cultural hubs of central Italy, including Perugia, Siena, Assisi, Arezzo, Cortona and Trasimeno Lago.
A vacation in this part of Tuscany, far away from the bustle of the town, close to nature and its riches, will awaken your spirit, regenerate your body and help you to relax. Your hosts' 30 year experience in holidays in the area will ensure you make the most of your stay.
The house has five rooms, each named after the view it offers - Montepulciano, Montefollonico, Alba, Amiata and Orizzonte. And from Il Girasole you can enjoy fantastic sunsets. At this side of Montepulciano the sunset arrives later than roundabout, creating a beautiful show. And particularly nice is apartment Alba; viewed from its windows, the sun appears to rise from the city of Montepulciano itself.
The rooms are all furnished in Tuscan style with terraces, heating, bureaux, TVs and bathrooms with showers. On the ground floor there are two apartments that have use of the kitchen. There are also around five hectares of land planted with vineyards, olive trees, cereals and plum trees; if you wish, and if you time it right, you can join the harvesting of the grapes and the olives.
