Hotel accommodation in Tuscany - a small country inn in Chianti

Locanda La Capannuccia

Hotel accommodation in Tuscany – a small country inn in Chianti offering rooms in an old converted farmhouse.

Locanda La Capannuccia is set amidst cypress-studded hills, a panoramic quilt of vineyards, olive groves and tiny villages delicately nestled. This is a secret landscape like miniature kingdoms in a fairytale ... you immediately see why Chianti is many people’s dream of the ideal Italy.

Explore fascinating little villages and towns such as Brolio, Monteriggioni, Castellina in Chianti, Radda, Gaiole in Chianti, Lucarelli, Colle Val d'Elsa and San Gimignano. And as you approach La Capannuccia itself, you find yourself travelling through a beautiful golden valley – at the end of which lies a home offering that unique Italian hospitality.

Five restfully furnished rooms have baths, TV, furnished in the typical country style of the area. By prior reservation, you can taste typical Tuscan cooking each night. For those guests who would like to learn the secrets of the local cooking, host Daniela gives cooking lessons. During the day, you can relax in the garden or have long walks in the woods among oak trees and cypresses, flowers and aromatic herbs. This is a Tuscan vacation to recharge your batteries.

The house boasts home cooking, locally produced wines and olive oil, soft sunlit lawns, flowers and herbs, a gentle brook, a swimming pool (in the process of being built) and ample parking on the premises.

La Capannuccia is also well situated for today’s dynamic world. The house is within reasonable driving distance of the airports at Florence, Pisa and Bologna, and close to rail and bus connections. Day trips into Tuscany’s art cities are easy to arrange.

The next town is Castellina in Chianti (4km away), whose origins date back to ancient times, when it guarded the border of the important Etruscan towns of Volterra, Chiusi and Fiesole. Round about, there are numerous archaeological sites of Roman and Etruscan origin, such as the tumulus at Monte Calvario (7th and 6th century BC). Castellina’s decline started during the Barbarian invasions and only around the 11th century, when Castellina was in the power of the Guidi counts, did it stage a recovery. Just as in the past, it assumed the function of a border town, this time marking the division of Florence and Siena. Because of its strategic position, Castellina in Chianti had a commanding role in the Lega del Chianti alliance that Florence used to control the south-eastern area bordering with Siena. Castellina’s 15th century town wall and watch towers date from this time and some are still standing.

Locanda La Capannuccia is superb for wine lovers too – it is ideally situated to visit the whole Chianti Classico area with its numerous Gallo Nero wineries at Siena, Florence, San Gimignano and the Val d'Elsa – ask your hosts about wine tours of Chianti.

In the morning, a hearty breakfast is waiting in the cosy lounge with fireplace. During the summer, breakfast is served under the parasols in the garden. All tastes are satisfied with coffee, cappuccino, tea, milk, bread, butter, cheese, eggs and homemade jams, with which Daniela prepares a delicious crostata (cake). During the winter time, the lounge can be used by guests to listen to music, watch TV or read a good book. It is also the ideal place to meet and talk in the evening.

Short stays are possible from €80 to €120 per night.
