The apartment lies between the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo and the Cathedral, and is within easy walking distance of most of Siena's attractions. The city centre is largely traffic free and the best way to get about is on foot. If necessary you can always take a small refreshment at one of the countless pavement cafes and watch the world wander by.

Siena is most famous for its extended wars with Florence and its involvement in the birth of the Renaissance, but scratch deeper and you'll find traces of the ancient Etruscans and Romans. Indeed, Siena is named after the Roman city of Sena Julia, which was flourishing 3 centuries before the birth of Christ. The city has a fascinating selection of museums and churches to explore, and maintains a mediaeval feel through its Palio and other regular pageants.

There are good transport links with Florence (you should see it at least once) and the city is perfectly placed for wine lovers: the vineyards of Chianti spread out to the north while the hilltowns of Montalcino and Montepulciano are within easy striking distance. Other attractions are the lush rolling countryside of the Crete Senese, the majestic monasteries, and the thermal-spa towns of Saturnia and Bagno Vignoni.
