Situated high above the Val d'Orcia sits Il Giglianello, a renovated traditional Tuscan farm house, sleeping at least 6 people. At 600 metres it has commanding views down the valley of the river Orcia and sits above the town of Castiglione d'Orcia. The region is unspoiled and still has the rural ambience that makes Tuscany such a magical place.
[ local map | map of region ]The hillsides surrounding the property sprout numerous vineyards and olive groves; the region is particularly famed for its excellent olive oil. This area has many small mediæval hamlets that are worth exploring; one such is Rocca d'Orcia, just outside the town of Castiglione, which is dominated by the 14th century castle of Rocca a Tentennano, an impressive tower that has commanding views down the valley.
The Val d'Orcia has always been an important route, from the Romans who traveled this lush valley, the Pilgrims who journeyed to Rome along the Francigena, to the great writers and travelers of the 19th century on their 'grand tours'. The landscape rolls in undulating hills to the great mountain of Amiata, whose flanks are covered by forest and cut with cool mountain streams that wind down to the river Orcia.
The nearest town is Castiglione d’Orcia (2km) where you can find local shops, restaurants and many other amenities. Only slightly further afield are the spas of Bagno Vignoni (7km) and San Filippo (11km) where you can take a dip in the therapeutic waters from their thermal spas. The city of Siena is only 40km away and you can reach the Mediterranean beaches within fifty minutes.
