L’Osservatorio is well named. It has an observatory in the garden and celestial names for two heavenly apartments converted from an ancient barn ... this really is an exceptional property.
The two apartments can be joined to make one, and Villa L'Osservatorio may therefore be taken as a villa rental sleeping 9 people. The large covered balcony of apartment Orione, equipped with table and chairs for outdoor dining, can seat more than 9 people, while the lovely living/dining room of apartment Aquarius is ideal for family dinners or lunches.
Two-bedroom Orione is on the upper ground floor, while three-bedroom Aquarius occupies all of the lower floor. Both are beautifully light and spacious, and both have their own entrances, secluded terraces for dining al fresco, and access to their own private garden.
The style here is timelessly Tuscan, with whitewashed walls, wooden ceilings, cooling tiles underfoot and fine antiques to add character. Yet every convenience is to hand, from filter coffee makers to microwave ovens.
The owners are keen astrologers. They live 50m away and share the immaculately tended gardens, but they are rarely in residence. They and their guests may, from time to time, use the pool, reached by a flight of steps from the garden terrace. Three large and very gentle dogs and a couple of cats roam free, so be prepared to make friends, though the owners don’t advise you bring children under 10 years of age.
Lying 530m above sea level and surrounded by woodland walks, the Observatory has plenty to discover, but you should also head a few miles to discover the medieval glories and superb shops of San Gimignano, Volterra and Certaldo, with the lesser-known but no-less interesting towns of Montaione and Gambassi Terme even closer. Travel 4km to see peaceful San Vivaldo's little chapels in the woods, while Florence, Siena and the coast are all easily reachable for day visits.
Orione is a 2-bedroom apartment, sleeping 4. It has a large open-plan living-dining room and well-equipped open-plan kitchen with hob, microwave oven and fridge. Both bedrooms have a double bed. You can drive to the nearest shops & restaurants in 5-15 minutes, to the airport at Pisa in an hour, Florence in 75 minutes, and Bologna in just under 2 hours.
