Visitors in Autumn will discover a season rich in colours and funghi. The forests are rich in edible mushrooms, an essential part of typical Tuscan cuisine. And on the cookery courses you'll learn to make traditional favourites such as Pappa al Pomodoro (Tuscan bread soup).

La Palazzina is handily situated for the thermal baths at Petriolo, Saturnia or San Filippo - ideal for a rejuvenating winter weekend getaway.

Nearby lies Montalcino, the quintessential Tuscan hill town. Sitting within a complete set of mediaeval walls, it lies beneath a spectacular castle, the whole scene hardly changed since the Middle Ages. There is San Gimignano, probably the most famous small town in Italy, and which powerfully evokes the atmosphere of mediaeval Tuscany. Its 15 towers soar into the sky, making this little hilltop town a spectacular place to visit. Or visit Pienza, created as a Utopian 'new town' by Pope Pius II in the 15th century, and the Abbey of San Galgano Abbey - the list goes on.

And at the very heart of the Chianti region, Siena rewards a day (or days) of exploration. It has a fine 12th century Gothic and Romanesque Cathedral built in stunning black and white marble, and one of the oldest universities in the world, founded in 1240. Its Campo is a unique medieval square at the heart of the city - quite possibly the most complete Gothic piazza in Italy. And Siena is probably most famous for its Palio, the bare-backed horse-race which take place every year in July and August around the huge Campo, and dating back to the 14th century. You'll find marvellous restaurants, cafes, bars and shops here.
