This Tuscan holiday house lies 1.5km from the village of Castelnuovo dell'Abate and 9.5km from Sant'Antimo. The lovely town of Montalcino lies 50km away and demands a visit. Montalcino is the place you imagine when you talk of Tuscan hill towns. Tidily set within a surviving circle of mediaeval walls, it sits beneath a spectacular castle, and gazing up at the town you could be back in the sixteenth century. The town is unspoiled by modern building and dominates the valley below, a marvellous vista of vineyards, olive groves, orchards and oak trees.
Like most of the Tuscan hill towns it is mediaeval in character but far older than that. The town has Etruscan or even Paleolithic origins, and first appears in records in the year 814, mentioned in a list of possessions given by Louis the Pious to the Abbey of Sant'Antimo.
