Siena is rich in art and sculpture. It has a fine 12th century Gothic and Romanesque Cathedral built in stunning black and white marble. Step within and you'll find the Duomo filled with artworks, including a fresco cycle by Pinturicchio. There is the Ospedale di Santa Maria della Scala, the old city hospital, now transformed into a monument to the Middle Ages, and with frescoed halls and chapels. See the Museo Civico, with frescoes by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, Simone Martini and many more on its mediaeval walls. And Siena boasts one of the oldest universities in the world, founded in 1240.

But you breathe in history and culture in Siena even if you never set foot in a museum. Right outside your hotel lies the Porta Romana; this huge bastion, the south gate to the city, contains the fresco of the Coronation of the Virgin by Taddeo di Bartolo.
