Within the grounds there are three small ponds, one stocked with fish and extensive woodlands and forest with easy pathways. There are two further buildings, each roughly 1000 metres apart. One, semi-restored, is an eleventh century monastery, while the other is occasionally occupied by the owners.
The estate overlooks the Chiascio River valley and sits amidst Umbria’s gentle rolling hills. These are the valleys that St Francis of Assisi is said to have travelled in his quest to tame and befriend the Wolf of Gubbio.
Umbria itself is classically referred to as ‘the green heart of Italy’ and also ‘the land of the saints’ (being birthplace to both Saint Francis and St Benedict (founder of the Benedictine Order). You must see Assisi, with its marvellous series of frescoes by Giotto within the Basilica di San Francesco. Orvieto, meanwhile, has a magnificent Gothic cathedral. And many Italians claim Gubbio as the most perfect mediaeval town centre in all Italy.
Most of all, Umbria is very old. Towns such as Perugia, Orvieto, Spoleto, Todi and Assisi date back to Roman times or before. Even the roads and the system of agriculture were laid out in early Christian times. To the east, Umbria meets the Apennines, and on the Tuscan border lies Lake Trasimeno, the biggest inland waterway in Italy ... hugely popular with watersport fans.
