There is a huge amount to do nearby, with lovely walks in the woods, including the 6.5km trail from Lisciano Niccone to Castiglione Mountain – also ideal for horse riders and mountain bikers. Three kilometres away lies La Puntalonga Manège, an 11th century building now housing a riding school offering riding lessons, show jumping skills and hacking through the beautiful Tuscan countryside.

And striking out you’ll find a wealth of history and culture to explore in this beautiful area that borders Tuscany and Umbria. Cortona is 18km away. This lovely town is one of the twelve cities that made up the Etruscan Federation. Spectacularly located high on a hill above the Valdichiana, it has terrific views towards Lake Trasimeno, Monte Amiata and Castiglione Fiorentino. Long a centre of art it is still noted for its architecture and museums, most notably the Museo dell'Accademia Etrusca and the Duomo, and is packed with quaint shops, good restaurants and pretty streets.

Head 31km in the opposite direction and you reach Perugia, inhabited for more than 25 centuries and with many Etruscan and Roman remains, as well as well-preserved buildings reflecting every era of Italian history and architecture. A stylish and hip city, it boasts a university and lots of good restaurants and bars. This is the hometown of the Umbria Jazz festival, and more traditional attractions include a fine Duomo, some good galleries and lovely mediaeval churches. And ensure you visit the unspoiled, charming little town of Citta di Castello: with its tidy mediaeval centre it’s well worth a day’s exploring.

Just 13km away is the oasis of Lake Trasimeno, one of the biggest lakes in Italy and with deliciously warm waters for most of the year (courtesy of its shallow waters). Trasimeno is great for swimming, sunbathing and watersports.
