Perugia itself is a lovely old city, with a great deal going on. The town’s strategic position on the River Tiber has always given it military and economic importance. A long history sees it tracing its root back to Etruria, when it was the most easterly of the dozen cities that formed the Etruscan federation. Conquered by Rome it disappeared into the obscurity of the Dark Ages, emerging as an independent comune in the 12th century.

The Perugians were always tough folk, ‘the most warlike people in Italy’ claimed historian Sismondi. Preferring ‘Mars to the Muse’ the townsfolk staged regular ‘games’ where the town split in two and pelted each other with rocks until one half had suffered so many woundings and deaths that they were forced to call ‘pax’. The birthplace of the Flagellants, Perugia punched so far above its weight that it even managed to conquer mighty Siena during Middle Ages.
Things are far more peaceful now and Perugia, with its university, successful football team, vibrant street life, cafes and shops, is a happening and fun place to be. Check out some excellent museums and galleries and the famous yearly Umbria Jazz festival.
All that and some of Europe’s loveliest countryside lies nearby too. Get more details on your holiday in Umbria by clicking below.
