The house lies 4km from Assisi, declared by Unesco a world heritage site. It's also on the Franciscan route to Gubbio: altogether, the Pro Vorbis Country House affords its guests a privileged position for touring Umbria. All the most interesting Umbrian cities, such as Spello, Spoleto, Todi, Gubbio, Orvieto and Perugia are no more than 40km away. But you can easily travel further afield. Rome is 160km and Florence 170km away; both are within two hours drive.

Umbria itself is often dubbed 'the green heart of Italy'. A lush and gentle region of Italy, it's typified by rolling hills dipping into valleys, streams and gentle woods of oak.

It's also the region of the classic Italian hill town of course. Gubbio is an unspoilt mediaeval gem. Rose-coloured houses are topped with orange-tiled roofs, and in the background rise the tree-clad Apennines. Gubbio has a host of good museums, churches and the Duomo itself. Spello meanwhile is on a smaller scale, an ancient town to which Roman legionaries once retired. Spoleto has a beautiful setting, also some of Italy's finest mediaeval churches. There is Todi, with arguably the most perfect mediaeval square in Italy, in the shape of the Piazza del Popolo. And check out Perugia, with its mediaeval heart and home to Perugino, the best chocolate in Italy.
