Casa di Penna is buried in the Italian countryside, but there are plenty of interesting towns nearby. Four km away lies the pleasant little town of Penna in Teverina, with all kinds of shops, restaurants and bars. Viterbo lies 30km distant. The capital of northern Lazio, Viterbo is a fascinating historic centre, predominantly mediaeval, and in the 13th century it rivalled Rome as a political centre. Indeed, the popes of the day resided here during a period of turbulence in the Eternal City. Check out the Piazza del Plebiscito, a square surrounded by 15th and 16th century buildings; there is the Papal Palace, a 13th century building overlooking the green valley that cuts through Viterbo; and there are any number of interesting mediaeval churches.

Travel 48km and you are in Orvieto. Its Gothic Duomo, complete with frescoes by Signorelli, make this one of the greatest tourist draws in Italy. Orvieto is also famed for its crisp white wines. Also check out the charming walled town of Spoleto, 60km away - home to some of Italy's most interesting Romanesque churches. [Region map]

And 70km distant lies Rome. The city of the Parthenon, the Colosseum, the Forum and the Vatican Museums needs little introduction. But being within easy driving distance for a day's visit, it makes the ideal complement to your idyllic holiday in the Italian countryside.

Rome airport is 100km away. For advice on planning your holiday in Umbria, your best way of reaching this central Italian holiday villa, and on the many things to do once you get there, just send a message below.
