There are picnic areas and native animals, and walking here you will stumble across castles, churches and villas - a truly idyllic location. The owners will be pleased to recommend local guides who can lead you on any of the dozen local hikes.
And there is plenty of urban life to enjoy too. The nearest town, San Venanzo, is built on an old volcano - the crater mouth is still visible and there is even a Volcano Museum. There is the little mediaeval village of Rotecastello, and the towering mediaeval settlement of Civitella dei Conti, which overlooks all the neighbouring valleys as far as Perugia.
Poggio Aquilone and Collelungo are just minutes away and Assisi lies 50km distant. Famous as the home of St Francis, founder of the Franciscan Order of monks, it attracts many tourists. The life of St Francis is commemorated in 28 frescoes by Giotto and Cimabue in the Basilica di San Francesco, Italy's earliest Gothic church. Although damaged by the earthquake that shook Umbria in 1997, the basilica is still a magnificent sight. The Temple of Minerva, dating from the 1st century BC and now a Catholic church, is also a sight that should not be missed.

Perugia, the region's capital, is 35km away. Continuously inhabited for more than 25 centuries and containing many Etruscan and Roman remains, it has well-preserved buildings reflecting every era in the subsequent development of Italian architecture. Particularly notable are the ancient Etruscan city walls. Deruta is 20km away, Orvieto 37km, Arezzo 50km and Siena 120km. [View on Google Map ] [Region map]
