The district of Cannaregio itself is one of the six historical districts of Venice (sestieri, meaning literally 'sixths'). The main canal in the neighbourhood (Canale di Cannaregio), is directly linked with the Canal Grande. This is one of Venice's most active waterways, and you will see gondolas, rowing boats, water taxis and waterbuses, all of which link the various districts of the city.

The architecture in this area of Venice is wonderful too. The Church of the Madonna dell'Orto is one of the more beautiful churches of Venice, famous for its frescoes by Tintoretto. Here you can see The Last Judgment, St Peter's Vision of the Cross, The Beheading of St Paul and Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple. In the family chapel to the right side of the altar, there are the graves of the artist and his sons. The name of this church arises from a miraculous vision of the Virgin, which a sculptor put in the garden of his house, and which was subsequently venerated by the inhabitants of the neighbourhood.

The nearby Ghetto, meanwhile, was probably the world's first Jewish Ghetto (and gave the name to those subsequently). Located on a little island in Cannaregio, the Ghetto was set up in 1516. Its inhabitants had a strict list of allowed and proscribed social and economic activities, and there was a curfew each night. It eventually became so overcrowded that, in 1797, its inhabitants got permission to live in other districts of the city.

It's merely a taste of the historic, architectural, artistic and cultural delights that away you in Venice. You'll also find marvellous restaurants, osterie and bars nearby. To find out more about this self catering budget apartment to rent in Venice, Italy, simply click below.
