Walking towards the Rialto Bridge, you will find the famous SS. Giovanni e Paolo Church.
Called “the square of wonders” by Venetians, Campo San Zanipolo, Venice’s most monumental square after San Marco, is dominated by the imposing brick façade of the Gothic church of S. Giovanni e Paolo and by the Renaissance building of the Scuola Grande di S. Marco, with a marble façade, now housing the hospital. This is a temple erected by the Dominican Friars and dedicated to the two third century Roman martyrs, the brothers Giovanni and Paolo. After St Mark’s, it was in this church that the official rites of the Serene Republic were performed. It was here that the funerals of the Doges were held, which is why their memorials can be found in and around this church, as well as those of the various condottieri of the Venetian Republic. The interior is in the form of a Latin cross with three naves and transepts and houses notable paintings by Bellini, Lotto, Veronese and Piazzetta and sculptures by Tullio and Pietro Lombardo, Vittoria and others. In the right-hand apse there is a very large 15th-century stained-glass window.
[ View on Google Map | map of region ]The Arsenale, or naval dockyard, was the place where the Venetians built their powerful military and mercantile fleets and for centuries it remained the pride and fortune of the Serenissima. In the busier periods more than 16,000 workers were employed there: chronicles from those times tell us that on one occasion a warship was completed in the Arsenal in 12 hours, and that a hundred such vessels were launched there in only two months. It was held in such awe by the rest of Europe that the word “arsenal” was in use in 14 languages. Over the centuries it was continually enlarged until it attained a considerable size: the entire north-east edge of Venice between the San Pietro di Castello Canal, la Tana, San Martino and San Francesco della Vigna. “It is the repository of the Republic of St. Mark’s naval memories and in it are also preserved relics of the various regional Italian navies up to the last war ... well worth a visit because of the variety and historical and artistic interest of the exhibits.”
