Halfway between Verona and Lake Garda, bordered by the Adige River to the south and the Prealpi Lessiniche to the north, the Valpolicella is a land famous for its marble and its wines, its mountain villages hewn from stone, with splendid churches and antique villas. The surrounding area is mainly given over to the vineyards. These produce both Valpolicella Classico and Recioto - in its two variations Amabile and Amarone; this wine has been made from dried grapes since Roman times. Surrounding the vines are olives and cherry trees.

There are many old churches (at least 30 deserve a visit) and even more villas (80 or more). The latter belonged to the aristocrats from Verona who, in centuries past, invested their wealth in country estates here.

You'll love exploring the countryside here. There is fine walking and hiking up into the Lessinia or onto the Monte Baldo - here you can camp out overnight in mountain huts and shelters which reach up to 1700 metres above sea level. There is mountain biking on organised trails, and maps are available for different skill levels. Or dive underground to explore the many caves in the area. You can go hiking among the vineyards of the Valpolicella, the waterfalls in Molina, to the unique Ponte di Veja, and up to the Corno d'Aquilio.

You must also explore Lake Garda, the biggest and the cleanest of the Italian Lakes, and superb for boating and other watersports. With mild winters and summer temperatures tempered by the breezes that blow north and south along the lake, the resorts on Garda never get unpleasantly hot.
